Sci-tech innovation supports Guizhou's high-quality development

During the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25), Guizhou province made major headway in integrating scientific and technological innovation with industrial innovation.

In 2025, the comprehensive sci-tech innovation level index of the province ranked 24th in the country, an increase of three places compared to 2020, and entered the second tier of the country. In 2024, the R&D investment intensity exceeded 1 percent for the first time, with R&D expenditure reaching 23.11 billion yuan ($3.27 billion). The contribution rate of technological innovation to economic growth reached 28.9 percent.

Five national key laboratories have been approved for construction in the province, and the total number of national innovation platforms has increased to 10. At the same time, five new provincial laboratories have been established, while 158 provincial-level innovation platforms have been restructured.

The proportion of large-scale industrial enterprises engaged in research and development in the province has reached 30.8 percent. In the new round of strategic mineral exploration, 20 exploration target areas have been submitted for exploration, and 893 million metric tons of manganese ore resources have been newly discovered, ranking first in Asia.

The talent support system is also improving quickly, with two academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering added. The number of national-level talents has reached 171, winning four national science and technology awards.
